This was in a local paper.

"Authorities say dozens of cats that snuck into a South Florida prison will be found new homes before the facility closes next month.

As many as 80 cats have burrowed under fences and taken up residence at the state-run prison Belle Glade. Prisoners have been feeding the animals, even though rules prohibit that.

The 1,000-inmate prison closes Dec.1. Officials say that there are more cats than prisoners at the facility. Just 69 inmates remain awaiting transfers.

Palm Beach County animal control officers are removing the cats so they won't starve when the prison closes,. They're offering to waive adoption fees.

Some of the cats have been euthanizes because they wee feral anc couldn't be adopted."

    lol,

Here's what I think....I think that it's very therapeutic for prisoners to develop a heart for animals. My Dad was a prison chaplain and did Bible studies by mail with hundreds of inmates over the years. When he passed away I received some incredible letters from inmates he had done Bible studies with. One man told me that he used to raise rolling pigeons (had never heard of them), but he saves some of his bread each day to feed the birds that light on the prison yard. There have wonderful stories of prisoners given the change to rehabilitate and train dogs, and it changed their lives.

I think they should take the cats to another prison

js had a bit of trauma happen to her furbabies yesterday. The owners of the empty lot next door where the ferals live mowed down the whole lot. They kitties are showing back up, and js has put out a lot of potted plants so that they can feel more at home, but it sounded absolutely horrible.

Honestly, just because a kitty is feral, they euthanize them? Well, these are people who incarcerate fellow human beings; I can't imagine them being nice to animals.

      RaisedByWolves,

I'm so sorry about js's babies. A feral cat usually can't be tamed, but they should be captured and neutered or spayed and released. I had dear friend, a psychiatrist, and her husband psychiatrist who had no children, and they did that routinely. They also had 20 rescued cats. Now as awful as that sounds, they had a huge home, and every one of the cats tended to hang out in a different room. You could walk in their house and not have a whiff of cat odor anyway.

I think that would be just fine. We could easily have 2-3 more, but we would need more money, more help around the house; so, we raise our two.
